Spark plugs
« on: January 27, 2012, 6:21:24 pm »
Has anyone tried platinum plugs in a briggs engine?

I was told they are far superior to normal plugs for starting, & in overall performance.

I have checked and the plugs for my 35 Briggs are available in the platinum range.  Tempted to get a set, but they are four time dearer than normal plugs and wondering if it is worth it?

I'm using irridium  ?? plugs on an LPG Land Rover and they made a huge difference - smoother, better starting and possibly a bit more power.

Iridium are also available for my engine.  I know I'm not going to get a lot extra power, but it would be nice if it gave a better spark & hopefully better reliability.

I would just change the normal plugs more often. The outside condition of spark plugs on my briggs deteriorates fairly quickly so I replace them frequently.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left !!

I have ordered iridium & standard plugs.  Ebay you can get 4 standard plugs for the 35 hp briggs for around £7.50 incuding P&P ;D

The price of iridium plugs are a different story, but they have to be worth a try ;) .

I have also ordered a new fuel primer bulb as mine is starting to go stiff, as its been on there for 30 months.
Fuel filter.
I need to suss out the part numbers for the air filter and I think I may see if I can get a new kit to refurbish the Briggs fuel pump, as that has done about 50 hours so I think it has to be worth changing while I am servicing the engine.
Also need to find the oil filter number, as I fitted a genuine Briggs last time & it cost me over £20 which is a rip off.

I have Fram PH8170 or from the Mann site W712/83. The Mann filter fits my 23hp and I think it's the same as the 35hp.

Electric fuel pump. No need for a bulb primer and possibly more reliable than the Briggs pump.

The Briggs pulse pumps are exremely reliable but don't lift the fuel as well as the facet type. In saying that I have bought an electric pump for the Surveyor build but the pulse will stay as a  back up if ever needed. I found one similar to this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-12v-ELECTRIC-FUEL-PUMP-SOLID-STATE-/130624432717?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e69d2aa4d

for a good price but metal body so corrosion issue. Gav's version is probably a better bet being plastic bodied. Remember to get the low pressure version or fit a regulator if it's the higher rated pump.
